Abstract

Phenols and mixtures containing them are dehydrated by distilling off the water with the aid of an entrainer which forms with the water a constant boiling point mixture of minimum boiling point. An aqueous cresol containing 96 per cent cresol and 4 per cent water is introduced into the upper third of a continuous distillation column and toluene as entrainer is introduced a few plates higher up the column in such quantity that the boiling point (85 DEG C.) of the azeotropic mixture comprising 12 parts water and 60 parts toluene, is maintained. Anhydrous cresol collects in the still. In the dehydration of an aqueous mixture of phenol and an inorganic solvent, the latter may serve as the entrainer, further quantities being added if required. A mixture produced in the hydrolysis of chlorobenzene by alkalis under pressure comprising 70 parts phenol, 5 parts chlorobenzene, 15 parts diphenyl ether, and 10 parts water, is similarly dehydrated in a column to which additional chlorobenzene is admitted at a higher level.ALSO:Phenols and mixtures containing them are dehydrated by distilling off the water with the aid of an entrainer which forms with the water a constant boiling point mixture of minimum boiling-point.
