337,808. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 6, 1929. Moth-proofing ; proofing compositions. - The hydroxy di- and tri-arylmethanes prepared according to Specifications 316,900, 330,893, 330,894, 333,561, 335,547, 337,832, and 338,126 after sulphonation are used for protecting wool, fur or the like, against moths or other pests. According to examples, the following compounds are sulphonated with concentrated sulphuric acid 2-hydroxy-3 : 5-dibrom (and dichlor) diphenylmethane and derivatives thereof halogenated in the unsubstituted phenyl nucleus, and the products obtained by condensing 1 molecule of pchlorphenol with 1 molecule of 3 : 5-dichlor-2- hvdroxybenzyl alcohol, and 2 molecules of p-chlorphenol with 1 molecule of formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, p-chlorbenzaldehyde or 3-hydroxy-2 : 4 : 6-trichlorbenzaldehyde. The sulphonation of a crude product derived from formaldehyde and pchlorphenol and containing a compound of the formula : is also described. ,According to further examples,. products obtained by condensing 1 molecule of ochlorbenzaldehyde or 2 : 6-dichlorbenzaldehyde with 2 molecules of 2 : 4-dichlorphenol are sulphonated with oleum. Chlorsulphonic acid is also mentioned as a sulphonating agent. The wool &c. may be protected against moth by treatment with a solution of the proofing agents in organic solvents or the agents may be added to a dyebath whereby the fibres are simultaneously dyed and protected.
