Abstract

336,706. Powell, T. B., and Crawford, C. J. Aug. 10, 1929. Universal hinges. - A compound hinge primarily intended for the lids of portable radio sets provides for the opening of the lid about a horizontal axis and a subsequent turning of the lid about a vertical axis. The lid members 2, 3 of the horizontal hinges are connected by a two-fold plate 1 having a semi-circular slot cut in its inner sheet and a semi-circular plate 7 secured to the lid rides in the slot. The plate 7 has rack teeth 11 which engage one or other of two small pinions 12, 13 secured on the hinging rod 14. This rod may extend beyond the hinges 2, 3 and be provided with cranked handle portions 15. The fitting may be provided with a stay bar 5 hinged to the plate 1 and sliding in a guide on the side of the box. The rotary movement of the plate 7 is limited by stops 9 on the plate 1 and projections 10 on the plate 7.
