336,446. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges., and Johnson, J. Y. Oct. 29, 1929. Addition to 241,214. Colouring rubber.-Rubber is coloured by rolling into solid rubber one of the water soluble components of a practically water insoluble dyestuff, and then precipitating the dyestuff within the product. The water soluble components are usually applied in the form of a concentrated aqueous dispersion such as a paste or a more fluid dispersion, and the precipitating agents are added in the dry state or dispersed in a liquid. Example. 300 parts of crepe rubber are masticated on the rollers and 5 parts of 2-3- hydroxynaphthoic acid-orbho-anisidide dispersed in a mixture of 12.3 parts of aqueous caustic soda of 34‹ BeaumÚ strength, 0.5 parts of Turkey red oil and 100 parts of water are rolled into rubber until completely dispersed, when 5 parts of the diazo compound of 5-nitro 2-toluidine dispersed in 0.5 part of water are rolled into the mixture, for about 3 minutes, after which the rubber sheet is washed with water. The usual compounding ingredients may be added. The invention also includes the formation of lakes in the rubber by two successive millings as described above, and also the use of vat and sulphur dyestuffs which develop on exposure to air of the rubber into which they have been milled.
