Abstract

338,303. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Twiss, D. F., Murphy, E. A., and James, R. G. Oct. 11, 1929. Colouring rubber articles.-Rubber etc. articles obtained from aqueous dispersions by dipping, spreading, painting, extruding, spraying, electrophoresis, impregnating, or moulding are coloured by chemical reactions locally or generally over their surfaces subsequent to the formation of the article either by incorporating one or more of the reacting substances with the aqueous dispersion before the formation of the article, and then treating the formed article with a second reagent, or alternatively the formed but not dried article may be brought into contact with chemical reagents, which upon further treatment with other reagents will form the desired colour. In addition to the usual compounding ingredients, aqueous dispersions of synthetic or mineral rubbers or rubber substitutes such as factice, or cellulose esters or casein may be added to the aqueous dispersion of rubber. Example. A wet shaped deposit is produced from latex containing a substance such as #-naphthol which can react with a diazo solution to produce a dyestuff preferably insoluble in water. The formed but not dried article is immersed in a solution of diazotized aniline, p-nitraniline or primuline to produce a red azo dye. If desired the application of the diazo solution can be local with consequent local development of colour. In other examples (1) the formed article is dipped in a solution of indigo white, and becomes blue by oxidation; (2) an article which has been coagulated or set by an aluminium or other salt is dipped in a hot solution of alizarin, to form a lake; (3) an article which has been set by an acid coagulant is dipped in an alkaline sulphide solution of a sulphur dye to precipitate the dye. Specifications 290,313 and 303,544 are referred to.
