Condensing, scrubbing, and washing processes. -Gases which contain ammonia and sulphuretted hydrogen, the latter being present in greater amount than is represented by the ratio 2NH3: 1H2S are divided into two portions, one containing as much sulphuretted hydrogen as can be combined with the available ammonia which is concentrated therein to eliminate the sulphuretted hydrogen. The other portion after removal of the ammonia may be used for firing gas producers or it may be treated in a separate plant for removal of the sulphuretted hydrogen and then reunited with the other purified portion. The crude gases may be first cooled to separate ammonia and tar and the ammonia driven off by treatment with lime and added to the first portion of gas. Any ammonia remaining in the other portion is also driven off and added to the first portion. The division of the gas stream may be adjusted according to a mean value of the ammonia and sulphuretted hydrogen and variations in the ratio compensated for by maintaining the scrubber slightly ammoniacal.
