Toning; reversing.-In a process of mordanting photographic silver images, the existing opaque compounds e.g. silver, silver bromide, are converted into transparent complex compounds having powerful mordanting properties by bathing in a complex-forming solvent, e.g. a metallic iodide, urea, a thiocyanate or a thiocarbamide. In one example, the black silver image is treated with a bleaching solution containing potassium ferricyanide and calcium iodide, the double compound, silver iodide-calcium iodide, being formed immediately. Agents which are transformed into new compounds with the complex former, e.g. bisulphites, may be added to the bleaching solution. In another example, in carrying out the reversal process, the silver bromide present is converted into a dye mordant and dyed black, the silver image being afterwards removed.
