Toning.-In a process for transforming the silver of photographic images into other compounds, the silver is first converted into an insoluble compound, e.g. silver halide, which is then treated with a solution containing a complexforming solvent and a re-agent which immediately reprecipitates the silver as an insoluble compound. Examples of complex-forming solvents used are, manganic thiocyanate and compounds of the carbamide and thiourea groups, e.g. thiosinamine. The insoluble reaction products may be produced by the addition of potassium ferrocyanide, Seignette salt or sodium phosphotungstate. If sulphonic acids, e.g. hydracid 1.8-anidonaphthol- 3.6-disulpho acid, are used a silver compound of the acid is produced which may be converted into an azo dyestuff. If thiocarbamide is used with a silver compound insoluble therein, a resin-like substance is formed which renders the gelatin water-repelling in the neighbourhood of the image, the unprotected gelatin being then dyed to yield a negative dye image.
