Sledges are steered by means of a rudder comprising vanes A rotatable in a plane transverse to the sledge about a substantially horizontal shaft S by means of a steering handle or helm V. The rudder may be mounted at either end or at both ends and the shaft or shafts may be rotated either directly or by gearing. The vanes may be pivotally connected to the shaft S and the steering action arises through the sidewise thrust of the vanes on the ground.
