335,206. British Celanese, Ltd., and Wainwright, J. A. June 19, 1929. Intaglio-plate printing.- Textile or other materials made of or containing cellulose esters or ethers, e.g., the formate, acetate, propionate, or butyrate of cellulose, methyl, ethyl, or benzyl cellulose, or the product of the treatment of alkalized cellulose with p-toluene sulphochloride, are printed with plates or rollers engraved to varying depths in order to produce graded colour effects. The printing-surfaces are preferably prepared by the photogravure method, and are employed in the ordinary way. The colours used are preferably dispersed water-insoluble compounds, and swelling-agents may be added as described in Specification 244,143, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for]; or colouring matter may be produced on the material. The material may first be impregnated with aluminium acetate or other reagent to increase sharpness of definition, and dyeing, discharging, finishing, or other treatment may be applied before or after printing.
