Abstract

333,357. Weston, Shipton, & Weston, Ltd., and Shipley, A. H. July 4, 1929. Stopping pipes.-A device for temporarily stopping gas mains 13 comprises a rubber bag 5 which is normally located. in its deflated condition within a tubular housing 1 disposed upon the main and is adapted to be inserted into the main through an aperture 33 therein and then inflated. The bag is carried by a hollow plunger 4 which is slidable in the housing and is provided at its outer end with a handle 9 and air inlet 10, while the open end of the housing is provided with a flange 17 for attachment of the device to a fitting 12 carried by the main, leakage of gas being prevented by a packing ring 15 carried by the housing and engaging the bore of the said fitting. The fitting is also provided with a shutter 21 located in a compartment 22 carried thereby and adapted to close the aperture 33 and prevent leakage of gas when the stopping device is removed. In a modification, Fig. 4, the bag is replaced by a collapsable diaphragm comprising flexible frame members 35, 36 and an attached piece 37 of rubberized fabric. The frame, members are hinged at 38 to a plunger movable within the housing 1<a> and also at 39 to a part 40 of a telescopic connection comprising a tube 41 fixed in the plunger and an inner rod or tube 42 controlled by a spring in the tube 41.
