Wrapping and packeting cigarettes.-Cigarettes are wrapped in two strip wrappers, the second of which is applied at right angles to the first, and are inserted in packets or cartons. A group G of cigarettes is fed by a plunger 2 between guide bars 1, 1<1>, and carries a wrapper strip E with it into a pocket 3 of a turntable 4. The strip is severed by knives 6 and held by jaws 7 until engaged by the group. The turntable is intermittently rotated by a crank 13 and pawl and ratchet gearing 9 - - 11. The downwardly projecting end of the wrapper strip is raised into a horizontal position by a stationary folder 14 during the first intermittent rotation of 60‹, and arrives over a folding flap 15, Figs. 1 and 4<a>. The flap is pivoted at 16 to a vertically movable slide, and is actuated, by rack and pinion gearing 16 - - 20, to turn first into a vertical position during the ascent of the slide, and then through a further right angle to lay the strip on the upper surface of the group. The cover plate 24 is cut away at 24' to allow the flap to make the last turn. The actuation of the slide 17 is effected by a cam surface 23 formed on the support 11 of the pawl 10 during- the return movement of the support. The partially wrapped group of cigarettes passes beneath a plunger 25 and over a strip 50 of foil severed by knives 35, being temporarily supported by resilient flaps 32. An open packet 51 is fed along a track 37 by a plunger 38 and is supported on a plunger 39 forming an extension of the feed track. The plunger 25 descends and forces the group of cigarettes and foil into the packet, the resilient flaps 32 yielding and assisting the insertion of the charge. A folding finger turns down one end of the strip upon the cigarettes, and, during its movement in the direction of the arrow C, Fig. 1, the other end is turned over by the upper edge of the feed channel. The packet may now be closed and wrapped.
