Abstract

Rolling tubes; die-rolling. - In a pilger mill with slightly tapering mandrel 7 to allow of easier stripping of the tube, the pass of the rolls 2 is varied to compensate for the taper and so make tubes of constant thickness of wall, the top roll 2 being raised gradually with the feed through its bearing screws 3, worms 4, 5 and 20, Fig. 2, and shaft 23 rotated by an arm 26 which moves with the feed and pushes a nut 25 along the shaft to rotate it. Shaft 23 drives shaft 11 through a cone clutch 16 kept in engagement with a rope and weight 15 or electromagnet &c. The weight is lifted to allow initial hand adjustment of the roll pass to the smallest outside diameter of the tube. In another arrangement the lower roll is allowed to drop by wedges screwed in and out through gearing actuated by a cam pin on the feed working in a groove in the enlarged shaft end.
