Abstract
1308382 Rolling tubes DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE AG 21 July 1970 [5 Aug 1969] 35326/70 Heading B3M In a tube rolling mill, in which shouldered rolls 1 reduce a tube 3 supported by a mandrel 2, the rolls can be rapidly withdrawn from the tube by their screw adjusting spindles 6 when a bulge develops in a tube. Such a bulge is to occur at the trailing end of a tube if the ratio of diameter to wall thickness is greater than 10 to 1. A photo-cell 18 detects a bulge and causes withdrawal of the rolls, after a predetermined time delay. After a further time delay movement of the rolls is stopped. The rolls can be rapidly withdrawn either by the normal screwdown motor 8, which for this application is provided with a supplementary high-speed gear or variable transmission, or by the use of a further motor 15. The motor 15 can be coupled by a clutch 17 to the screws 6, following uncoupling of the motor 8 by a clutch 10. A limit switch 20 may be used for stopping withdrawal of the rolls after they have moved a given (adjustable) distance from the tube.
