Abstract
331,828. Matthew, E. M. April 8, 1929. Diaphragms - loud-speakers; magnetic instruments.-The diaphragm of a sound reproducer or transmitter is centred by pneumatic rubber tube9 co-operating with curved working surfaces to prevent creep of diaphragm or tube relative to each other or to the housing. The Figure shows a moving-coil loud-spea.ker in which the moulded diaphragm is suspended at its cylindrical periphery C by a rubber tube <yz> engaging with the radiused surfaces X of the moulded ring T. The coil former H is recessed at J to receive the winding, which may be of magnetic wire, or ribbon wound edgewise, and is divided into sections by square section rubber bands, connections to the coil being anchored to pips M on the diaphragm. The coil former is centred both radially and axially by a rubber tube Y, working between the surface P of the cradle and a radiused portion K of the former. Further tubes may be provided such as at Y<3> or between the coil former and magnet pole R<2>. The apex of the diaphragm is retained in order to prevent passage, of air between opposite sides, or a disc may be affixed at F. By varying the curvature of the surfaces X, K and adjusting the inflation of the tubes the degree of restraint on the diaphragm may be adjusted. A shallow annulus W is provided to receive a further rubber tube to serve as an air seal between the ring T and a baffle. The drawings of the Provisional Specification illustrate various centring arrangements. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 (not shown) show a single tube co-operating with the free edge of a conical diaphragm; in Fig. 4 (not shown) the tube is gripped between a circular recess in the cone edge and a similar recess in the baffle; Fig. 5 (not shown) shows a diaphragm edge held in a double tube, while Figs. 5, 6 and 8 (not shown) give three arrangements employing two tubes, one on each side the diaphragm edge. Figs. 9, 10 and 11 (not shown) give centring arrangements for the former of a moving-coil instrument, the applications of the rubber tubes being generally similar to those for the diaphragm edge.
