Abstract

246,096. Round, H. J. Jan. 5,1924. Magnetic instruments; loud - speakers; diaphragms. - A rigid annular diaphragm 1 is mounted on rubber or other elastic material 4 which is gripped or secured to rings 5, 6, and is impulsed by means connected to the diaphragm at the mean of its internal and external diameters. The diaphragm may have a cylindrical flange 2 carrying the line coil or may be vibrated by a reed. A body 8, Fig. 4, placed at the base of the horn of a loud speaker leaves an annular space above the diaphragm. The diaphragm 1 may be made of ebonite, cardboard, or aluminium gauze made air-proof with paper, or may be corrugated radially or provided with radial strips stuck to it, and should have a high natural frequency in a radial direction. Fig. 3 shows a paper diaphragm 1 of double V-section with a strengthening ring 11, the line coils 3 being arranged between the poles of an annular magnet M of the type shown in Specification 229,759. The flange 2 may be secured to the diaphragm by a strip of silk cut to form tongues turned alternately to each side of the uncut portion, the tongues being stuck to the diaphragm and the uncut portion to the flange 2. The top of the flange 2 may be connected at intervals to both edges of the diaphragm to increase its rigidity. The weight of the coil 3 should be of the same order as that of the diaphragm. When a large diaphragm is used, the coil 3 is not carried on the diaphragm, but the flange 2 is situated at the base of a conical tube connected at its apex to a reed armature. The material 4 supporting the diaphragm should be stretched to give the system a frequency of about 80. Instead of using rubber, the diaphragm may be supported by helical springs loosely covered with oil silk in order to seal the air gap.
