Inking-apparatus.-The fountain-roller is given a continuous and infinitely variable movement, which is positive and free. from slip, and is derived from the press mechanism, but is independent of the speed of the press, by means such as ratchet-mechanism and a double pawl having a variable stroke, the motion being imparted by two cam-levers, one of which is always on its forward stroke before the other has completed its stroke, so that the. movement is substantially continuous. Ink is transferred from a fountainroller c, Fig. 1, to an ink-drum b, adjacent thereto, by capillary attraction. The fountain-roller is geared to a spindle f, carrying two ratchetwheels h, which are engaged by pawls on arms h<1>. The arms h<1> are connected by links h<2> to the lower ends of slotted links h<3> pivoted to sliding blocks i<1>, which can be raised and lowered by means of screws i<2> having hand-wheels i<3>. The links h<3> are oscillated to a variable extent, depending on the position of the blocks i<1>, by cam-levers k, having pins k<3> in engagement with the slots in the links. The levers are operated by cams arranged in diametrically opposite positions on a shaft n, which is driven by the press mechanism, so that the pawl-carrying arms h<1> are operated in alternation.
