Abstract

256,752. Elsworth, T. F., Wright, F. W., Harker, P., and Mann & Co., Ltd., G. July 2, 1925. Delivery apparatus.-The driving-mechanism for the delivery chains of a printing-machine is controlled by a timed cam so that the chains receive a cyclic movement of the character described in Specification 19673/11, the speed of the chains being equal to the uniform peripheral speed of the impression or take-off cylinder during the take-off portion of the cycle, and being slowed down for the remainder of the cycle. Fig. 1 shows a form of cam applicable to the epicyclic driving-mechanism described in Specification 210,481. The cam comprises five sections, the larger section B-C being an archimedean spiral for the rim at maximum speed, the section D-H giving the minimum speed for delivery, the sections C-D and E-A a return to average speed, and section A-B acceleration to the maximum speed. Fig 2 shows the application of two similar cams 6, 7 set 180‹ apart in an offset rotary printing-machine in which the impression cylinder 1 makes two revolutions per impression, the cams having the main portion an archimedean spiral to give the uniform maximum speed for take-off. The cams control rocking levers 8, 9 tinked to rack-bars 15, 16 engaging with pinions 19 loose on a shaft 20 ,and provided with projections 21, 22 carrying pawls 23, 24 engaging with shoulders or notches 25, 26 on a boss 27 fast on the shaft 20, so that one rackbar drives the shaft 20 on its forward stroke while the other rack-bar returns idle on its backward stroke. The chain wheel 29 is driven from the shaft 20 through gearing 28, 30, 31, 32. In another arrangement the timed cam is used to reciprocate a sliding helical pinion forming part of the driving-mechanism.
