Abstract
331,453. K³nsztler, M. June 15, 1929, [Convention date]. Probes.-A stomach or duodenal probe comprises a flexible tube a<1> having a screwed socket b<1> at its upper end to which may be secured a screwed nipple q, loose on a stiffening wire m insertable into the tube, or, after the removal of the wire, a nipple on an extension tube. The nozzle e at the lower end of the tube a<1> is furnished with a silk or like thread f, passing through axial and lateral apertures in the nozzle and carrying a plummet d provided with a recess which may be fitted over the nozzle. The wire m is provided with a bulbous end n, a handle o and a collar p limiting the movement of the member q. In use the thread f is drawn up until the plummet d covers the nozzle e, the wire m is then inserted and secured by the nipple q, the end n trapping and holding the thread. The appliance is then inserted into the gullet and the wire m removed, allowing the plummet d to fall. Finally the extension tube is attached and the appliance introduced further into the gullet by pressing or by swallowing on the part of the patient. The plummet is stated to be conveyed rapidly into the duodenum by the action of the stomach. An ulcerous condition of the pylorus is detected by a brownish-black staining of the thread f, in contrast to the yellow staining due to bile.
