Abstract

Cylinders receiving liquid fuel - The combustion chamber of a compressionignition engine has a concentric truncated conical extension E<6> of the combustion chamber, an auxiliary combustion chamber C being provided within the extension, into which chamber the fuel is directly injected through a nozzle G. The auxiliary chamber C is provided with openings D communic,ating with the extension E<6>, a deflecting portion A of the chamber being arranged directly opposite the nozzle and in a position where it is subjected to the maximum heat so that the fuel impinging on the deflector may be vaporized or partial combustion may be effected. Alternative forms and constructions of the auxiliary chamber are described; it may be formed by a flat perforated plate which is secured across the upper portion of the cylinder extension, the centre of the plate being unperforated to provide a deflector ; or a flat deflecting-plate may be held in alignment with the injection nozzle by means of a plurality of radial heat-conducting arms formed integral with the deflector, these arms being bolted or otherwise secured to the wall of the extension E<6>. A plurality of injector nozzles with deflecting and vaporizing plates may be employed in each combustion chamber.
