Surface and outline gauges.-Relates to themplates of the kind comprising a number of thin laminations of equal length arranged side by side and adapted to slide lengthwise through a holder and be set to any shape, and consists in securing a strip over the ends of the laminations to protect the surface to be gauged. The invention is particularly intended in use by dentists taking the shape of the human face. A number of thin metal laminations 1 arranged side by side are held by a clamp comprising front and back bars 2, 3 and a movable bar 4. Guides 5 are arranged at each side of the series. The bars 2, 3 are recessed to accommodate the aminations together with the bar 4 and are detachably connected together by screws 7. A screw 8 midway of the bar 3 serves to operate the movable bar 4 to clamp or unclamp the laminations. A layer of rubber or other suitable material 10 may be provided on the surfaces of the bars actually in contact with the laminations to form a clinging surface. A detachable extension piece 11 is clamped by screws 12 to each end of the bars 2, 3 and provided respectively with a suspension pulley for overhead support and a handle 32. A protective strip 13 of rubber is held over the ends of the laminations and is passed over and attached at the ends to small rollers 14 mounted between a pair of rods 15 adapted to slide parallel to the laminations in lugs 16 formed on the extension pieces, or on the guide pieces 5 or bars 2, 3. In a modification, the laminations are clamped between bars 20, 21 screws 22 passing through both bars and backing plates 23 which bear upon guide pieces 24 at both sides of the laminations. Extension pieces 25 are secured by pins passing through holes therein and through the backing plates 23. The extension pieces mav be formed in one with one or both of the bars 20, 21. Upper or lower gripping handles 32 may be provided or a pulley suspension as before. One of the guide pieces 5 or 24 may be made adjustable to vary the friction between the laminations.
