DRAWr-CLAIVIP FOR DRAW-BENCH ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,710, dated. June 28, 1904.
Application filed November 23, 1903. Serial No. 182,212. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, AUGUST A. BERGHOF and FREDERICK W. THEBERATH, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draw-Clamps for Draw-Benches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, 1
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference to improvements in draw-clamps or Vises to be used.
with draw-benches for the purposes of drawing wire or for drawing sheet metal or other material over moldings or the like to suit the gage and shape of the material desired to be drawn.
The principal purpose of the present invention is to provide a simply-constructed draw- 5 clamp or vise which is to be used with any ordinary and usual construction of draw-bench with a View of arranging the parts of the clamp or vise in such a manner that the grip of the clamping-jaws upon the material to be drawn 3 will be positive and the harder the pull the tighter will be the clamping action of the jaws, whereby the slip or displacement of the end portion of the material which is being drawn from between the holding-jaws ofthe clamp or vise is positively overcome.
The present invention consists, therefore, in the novel construction of draw-clamp or vise hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrangements 4 and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which are appended to and form an essential part of the present specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a draw-' principles of the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the device, the said section being taken on line 33 in Fig. 5 of the drawings looking toward the holding or clamping jaws of the device. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical'section of the draw-clamp or vise, illustrating the parts of the device in their actuated or clamped or holding relation; and Fig. 5 is a similar'sectional representation of the device, but representing the parts in their normally inoperative relation to each other.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete drawclamp or vise, to be made, preferably, in the form of a carriage movably placed upon the bed or framework of adraw-bench.
The draw-clamp or vise which embodies the principles of the present invention comprises a pair of body members 2 and 3, the lower member 2 being provided with a jaw 4: and the upper member 3 being provided with a jaw 5.
The said'lowcr member 2, as will be seen from the drawings, is preferably formed with an upwardly extending portion 6 and with a downwardly-extendingfend member 7, which has a pair of wheels or rollers 8, preferably provided with flanges arranged upon a journal 9 upon the opposite sides of said end member 7, substantially as illustrated. Near the forward end portion of the said member 2 the same is provided with another pair of wheels or rollers 10, arranged upon a journal 11 upon the opposite sides of the said member 2,whereby the said member forms a carriage which can be placed upon the draw-bench to be moved back and forth thereon, as will'be'clearly-understood. The upper body member 3 is pivotally connected with the said lower member 2, preferably to the said upwardly-extending portion 6 and preferably by means of a forked end portion 12 and a journal-pin 13, which extends through the various portions, substantially as illustrated.
The upper face of the jaw member 4 has connected therewith in any suitable manner a holding or jaw plate 14 of hardened and tempered steel, and in a like manner the under face of the jaw member 5 has connected therewith a holding or jaw plate 15 of hardened and tempered steel. These plates M and 15 are preferably detachably connected with the respective jaw members, so as to be replaced when worn down, by means of an arrangement of dovetail projections 16 and correspondingly-shaped recesses 17, as illustrated; but of course it will be evident that any other suitable fastening means may be employed.
Referring to Figs. 3, 4:, and 5 of the drawings, it will be seen that the said upper body member 3 is made with a recess 18, across which extends a pivotal pin 19, with which is pivotally connected the one end of a link 20. Pivotally connected with portions of the journal 11 are the lower end portions of a suitable yoke or frame 21, preferably provided with a handle 22, the said yoke or frame embracing both the said main body members 2 and 3, as illustrated, and being provided with the pivotal pins or rods 23 and 24. Connected with the said pin or rod 23 is the opposite end portion of the link 20, forming with said yoke or frame 21 a toggle connection which can be made to oscillate back and forth by means of its handle 22, whereby the two main body members 2 and 3 and their jaws are easily opened and closed upon each other practically in the manner of a pair of shears, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. Connected with the previously-mentioned rod or pin 24 of the said yoke or frame 21 are a pair of con necting rods or links 25, between the opposite end portions of which is pivotally arranged upon a connecting pin or rod 26 a tubular body portion 27 of an arm 28, said arm 28 being provided at its free end with a hook 29, which is to be hooked into a link of the chain ordinarily employed with the drawbench with which the draw-clamp or vise is to be used.
The operation of the draw-clamp or vise will be clearly evident from the above description and from an inspection of the accompanying drawings. In its use with the draw-bench the device is placed upon the frame or bed of the draw-bench that it can be moved back and forth thereon by means of its wheels or rollers 8 and 10. To place the wire which is to be drawn or the sheet metal to be drawn over a molding between the jaw-plates by means of the handle 22, the yoke or frame 21 and link 20 are caused to assume the positions indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, whereby the members 2 and 3 and their holding-jaws are brought into their separated relation to permit the piece which is to be drawn to be placed between the separated jaws. The handle 22 and yoke or frame 21-are' then thrown into the position indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, whereby the two body members 2 and 3 will be brought down upon each other and their jaws will be tightly closed over the end portion of the piece which is to be drawn, and said piece is thus held between the said jaws in the manner of a vise. The hook 29, connected with the arm 28, is then hooked over a link of the chain of the draw-bench, and when the machine proper is set in operation the chain causes the draw-clamp or vise to be pulled over the bed or framework of the drawbench, .and it will be clearly evident from the arrangement of the connecting-links 25 with the yoke or frame 21 that the harder the pull the more tightly will the grasping-jaws of the members 2 and 3 be caused to grip the article which is to be drawn.
From the previous description of our present invention it will be seen that the construction of the device and the workings of its parts are most simple; but it will be evident that these arrangements andcombinations of the parts are capable of changes and modifications without departing from the scope of the present invention. Hence we do not limit our invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described in the foregoing specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do we confine ourselves to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1.
