[Class 83 (iv)] A tool for bending or straightening wire, tubes, bars &c. particularly for bending in situ local bends caused in overhead traction wires by trolley heads upon dewirement, comprising a carrier mounting a top pressure roll and bottom pressure members and provided with a means for driving it along the wire &c. to bend the same by a rolling action, has the roller adjustably mounted in a support which is readily displaced from its working position so that the tool may be applied at any point of a long wire. The carrier consists of a pair of side frame members each comprising a pair of plates 1, 2, the plates 1 mounting a pair of rollers 7 and the plates 2 being slotted at 16 to receive a slide 20 carrying an adjustable top roller 5. The roller 5 engages one side of the wire &c. whereas the rollers 7 may engage the wire either directly or through an intermediate bar 8 which has a rack 9 on its underside along which the carrier is traversed by a pinion 11 operated by handles 13. The upper side of the bar may be inclined from opposite ends and be provided with a central recess 14 so that as the carrier is traversed backwards and forwards along the rack with adjustment of the roller 5 by the screw 6, the upward deformation in the wire may be bent past the straight position to allow for its elastic recovery on release. The bar has end stops 31 and is provided at one or both ends with slotted work clamping hooks 26 which are adjusted by screws 29 and may be swung about pins 27 so that the apparatus may be brought up against the wire. For this purpose also the roller 5 and its mounting may be removed from the slot 16. In order to effect this the adjusting screw 6 passes through a cross bar 22 carrying hooks 23 which are normally held by pins 18 engaging between the hooks and projections 17 on the plates 2, the pins being connected by springs 24. In order to remove the slide &c. the screw 6 is slackened off and the pins 18 drawn apart, then taken over the projections 17 and then placed in the recesses 25 in the hooks. For operating on a traction line close to its support the roller 5 may be mounted near one end of a carrier. Curving may be effected by varying the form of the bar 8. To avoid removing the upper roller 5 for application of the apparatus to the wire the carrier may be made in two parts hinged together. According to the Provisional Specification the rollers may be coupled by gear wheels or chain drive to traverse the carrier along the wire.
