Abstract

717,605. Induction heating. MUNRO & MILLER, Ltd. Feb. 3, 1953, [Feb. 8, 1952.] No. 3433/52. Class 39 (3). [Also in Group XXII] A heating unit, for use in apparatus for bending metal tubes in which the tubes are simultaneously heated and forced over a mandrel having a metal shaping portion, comprises a rigid electric induction heating coil which is substantially U-shaped in cross-section. Metal tubes 21 forced over a curved mandrel are heated by a channelshaped induction coil 10 adjustably disposed thereover. The channel may be shallower at one end and one end may be flared outwardly. The coil is carried by a bar 13 vertically adjustable in a sleeve 22, Fig. 1, of a bar 20. The bar 20 is disposed substantially parallel to the mandrel and is adjusted longitudinally by rack and pinion means 28, 27; it may be supported by a roller 31 on the tubes on the mandrel. The coil and leads 18 thereto are tubular to allow for circulation of cooling liquid. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the bar 13 is secured directly to a bar 36 supported at one end on a roller 38 on. the tubes on the mandrel and pivotally connected at the other end to a lug 40 on an endless chain 41. This chain moves the bar 36 longitudinally until the lug passes an idler sprocket 43 when further movement tilts the bar about the roller 38. Specification 697,122 is referred to.
