Abstract

330,369. Jessop, W., Drums, Ltd., and International paint & Compositions Co., Ltd. April 30, 1929. Guards, controlling; interconnecting guard with starting-gear.- In guards of the outwardly-swinging type for presses, stamps, hammers, &c., a guard member is swung into a normal " safe " position to cover the danger zone by actuation of the starting-gear, and is only swung fully outwards by power of the machine to remove the operator's hand if the guard is thereby prevented from assuming the safe position. On depressing the starting-pedal 25, a roller 31 acts on a cam-lever 22, pivoted at 20, to thrust forward a rod 23 before a lost-motion connection 35 to the clutch-trip 36 is taken up. The rod 23 acts on one of the side members 4 of a main guard frame to swing it into the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 2, a secondary frame 8, 9, pivoted to the main frame at 7, being 'turned down to close the gap above the main-frame bars 5 by the action on an arm 17, rigid with the secondary frame, of a roller 18 carried by a lever 19 also pivoted 20. If the operator's hand lies in the working space 6, it is caught between the frame bars 5, 9, and' a rod 11, which is connected to a crank 10 on the pivot 7 and, by a lost-motion connection 12, to a pivoted hook 13, fails to disconnect the hook from a pin 15 on the press shaft 16, so that rotation of the shaft 16 swings the main frame 4, 5 to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 3, the hand being resiliently gripped under the tension of a spring 21 acting on the lever 19.
