UNITED s'r'rs Patented Sept. 17, 1940 PINKING MACHINE Victor J. Sigoda, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Man Sew Pinking Attachment Corp, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Original application October 27, 1938, Serial No.

9 Claims.
This invention relates to pinking machines, the subject matter of the present application constituting a division of 'my pending application for patent filed October 27, 1938, Ser. No. 237,243.
My present improvements are applied more yparticularly to that type of pinking machine, in which the pinking wheel or cutter is operatively .mounted above a suitable base plate adapted to be positioned over the opening of a sewing machine table or other support and suitably secured thereto. A'pressure roller movably supported below thebase plate cooperates with the pinker wheel, and a leaf or plate spring resiliently urges said roller upwardly to press the fabric materia against the teeth of the pinker wheel.
The present invention has for its general object and purpose to provide a simple and easily operated means for regulating or adjusting the spring pressure on said roller.
More particularly, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the pinker wheel shaft and its .drive mechanism are mounted in a housing structure detachably secured'upon the upper surface of the base plate. It is a further object of my invention to provide a spring pressure regulating means which is wholly mounted upon and supported by said housing structure so that the upper surface of the base plate will be clear or unobstructed by the adjusting screw or other manually operated part.
Another object of the invention is to locate the hand knob or manually operable element for actuating the adjusting means at a convenient position. on one side of the housing structure where it can be easily reached and operated by the worker. a
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved pinking machine and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
In the drawing wherein I have illustrated one simple and practical embodiment of the invention and in which. similar reference characters .designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: a
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a preferred embodiment of'the machine, a fragment of the housing structure being shown in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken sub stantially on the line 22 of Fig.1, and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Referring in detailto the drawing, 5 designates a base plate of suitable dimensions,'having integrally cast therewith a continuous depending flange 6 defining a rectangular wall in plan, 5 which is adapted to be received in an opening of a sewing machine tableor work bench (not shown). Any suitable means may be employed for the purpose of rigidly and detachably securing this base plate in position upon the table or" bench.
Upon the upper surface of the base plate 5, a housing structure I for the pinker drive mechanismis adapted 'to be. detachably mounted 'by means of the screws orbolts'By Since the specific form of the housing structure and the drive I mechanism, constitute, no essential part of the present invention, they will not befurther described in detail. Itwill sufiice to state that the drive mechanism includes a shaft 9 to one end of which the pinker wheel Ill issuitablyifixed. A fabric feeding disk I l is'associated with the pinking wheel at one side thereof and held in operative relation to said pinkingv Wheel for automatic self adjustment with respect thereto in accord-' ance with the thicknessof the fabric or the num- 'ber of plies fed tothe'pinking wheel. As this automatic feed device is described-and claimed in my copending application for patent above; 0 identified, it will not' be furtherdescribed in detail.
Thepinking wheel llland feed wheel H are located above an opening [2 in 'the'base plate 5, and through this opening a roller I4 journaled in a cradle lb'pivotally mounted at one ofv its ends on the under side of thebase. plate as at I6, is projected upwardly into cooperative engagement with the pinking and feeding wheels bi means of a stiff leaf spring ll. As clearly shown 40 in Fig. 1 of the drawing; this spring is fulcrumed intermediate of its ends upon the bearing rod or pin-l8 and has upward bearing contact at one end against a longitudinal end extension I5 of the cradle 15. As shown in Figs. 2 and fiof the. drawing this spring is located at one side of the vertical center line of the housing structure 1 and theother 'end thereof is disposed below a transversely elongated opening, H9 in the base plate 5. a
The adjusting means for regulating or varying the pressure of the spring .ll on the roller It includes a member 20 "pivotally, mounted within the housing structure '5, as at 2L Preferably this member is in the formof a bell crank lever hav- 55 ing an arcuately curved arm 22 extending transversely of the base plate 5 from the pivot 2| and downwardly through the opening IS in the base plate, the lower end of said arm having transversely sliding contact upon the end of the spring I! and exerting a downward bearing pressure thereon as clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The other arm 23 of said lever extends vertically upward from the pivot 2| and to the upper end thereof the inner end of the rod 24 is pivotally connected as at 25. This rod extends transversely of the housing I, the other end portion thereof being threaded and projecting exteriorly of the housing through an opening in the side wall It will be apparent from the above description that when the member 26 is rotated inthe direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, the rod 24 is drawn outwardly to rock the lever 20. The arm 22 of this lever is therebymoved downwardly through the opening I9, said lever arm in effect, constituting a cam exerting a downward pressure on the end of the spring IT and moving transversely across its upper surface. The upward pressure of this spring at its other end to urge the roller' against the cutter wheel l and feed disk H is thereby increased. In this manner a very sensitive regulation or adjustment of the pressure action ofroller M, in accordance with the particular character of fabric material being operated 'upon can be obtained.
From the above description, it will be appreciated that I have provided an adjusting means for regulating the spring pressure on roller l4,
which is not only simple and efficiently reliable in its operation but also of greatest convenience to the worker. By positioning the manually adjustable member 26 upon the side wall of the housing structure and in an elevated position above the base plate, it is easily accessible to the operator or worker. By removing this adjusting member from the base plate'of the machine, the fabrics piled in front of the worker upon said machin'e base will not be injured or soiled and require removal before it is possible to manipulate said member and make the necessary adjustment.
It will further be noted that the adjusting means is easily accessible from: the rear open end of the housing-and may be readily removed when necessary bysimply removing the pivot screw 2!. Also as the adjusting means is carried by the housing structure, in assembling the latter upon the base plate and securing the same by means of the bolts 8, the lever arm 22 is automatically positioned in proper bearing contact upon the end of the spring plate I'I. Also by conbodiment of the invention which has given excellent results in practice. However, it is to beunderstood that my present improvements might also be exemplified in numerous other alternative structural embodiments, as to form, construction and relative arrangement of the several elements. Accordingly, I reserve the privilege of incorporatingthe essential features in the present disclosure in such other equivalent embodinected to the other arm thereof.
