Patented Nov. ll, i924.
JAMES ELMER BOWEN, OF AKRON, OHIO.
ATTACHMENT FOB GALENDERING MACHINES.
Application filed. June 5,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, James E. Bowen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Attachments for Calendering Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a trimming device which is mainly designed for calender mills to trim the overflow of rubber from the fabric which is being coated with rubber.
The general object of the invention is to provide a knife with spring means for bolding it against the rolls and a hand lever for adjusting the tension of the spring so as to move the knife into and out of cutting position.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims:
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the device in use.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device itself.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the device.
Figure 4: is an edge view.
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views, and Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective of one of the elements embodied in the invention.
In these views, 1 indicates a part of the frame of the calender machine and 2 the rolls thereof. In carrying out my inven tion I secure a bearing 3 to the frame 1 adjacent the rolls and a shaft 4 is placed in said bearing. This shaft has a socket 5 at one end to receive one end of the knife carrying arm 6. A lever 7 is loosely mounted on the other end of the shaft and a leaf spring 8 has one end engaging a slot 9, formed in the end of the shaft and its other end is fastened to the lever by a strap 10. An annular rack 11 is formed on one end of 1922. Serial No. 566,087.
the bearing and this is engaged by a pawl 12 which is pivoted to the lever and is connected to a hand grip 13 by a rod let. A blade 15 has one end notched, as at 16, engage the block 17, which is placed on the square end of the arm 6 and this blade has a socket 18 to receive a knife 19 which is held in the socket by an eccentric 20 which is actuated by a thumb lever 21.
The device is arranged on the frame with the knife carrying arm extending in front of the rolls with the knife pointing towards the same. As the fabric is drawn through the rolls the knife is pressed against the rolls in a position to trim the rubber off the fabric by moving the lever to cause the spring to rotate the shaft and the arm to move the knife into this position. The ratchet mechanism will hold the lever and the spring in adjusted position. By freeing the pawl from the rack the lever and spring will return to normal position and thus move the knife away from the rolls.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall with in the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is v 1. A trimming device for calender machines. comprising a shaft, means for rotatably holding the same, a knife carrying part attached to the shaft, a handle and spring means for connecting the handle to the shaft.
2. A trimming device of the class described, comprising a shaft, means for rotatably supporting the same, a knife carrying arm attached to the shaft, a handle loosely mounted on the shaft. ratchet mechanism for holding the handle in adjusted position, and spring means for connecting the handle with the shaft.
3. A trimming device of the class described, comprising a shaft, means for rotatably supporting the same, a knife carrying arm connected with the shaft, a handle loosely connected with the shaft, ratchet mechanism for holding the handle in adjusted position, and a leaf spring connecting the handle with the shaft.
l. A trimming device of the class described, comprising a shaft, means for rotatably supporting the same, an arm con nected with the shaft, a blade connected with the arm, a knife reinovably connected with the blade, a handle and spring means for connecting the same with the shaft.
5. In a device for trinnning the overfiow of rubber from the fabric passing over a calender mill roller including a pivot-ally 10 supported knife movable at right angles to the direction of travel of the fabric and adapted to engage one of the longitudinal edges of the latter, and means for adjusting the knife toward and away from the 1 fabric.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
