Abstract

329,971. Smith, W. S., Garnett, H. J., and Holden, J. A. Feb. 27, 19'29. Annealing, and modifying physical characteristics of metals. - The treatment of a material for loading a signalling conductor omprises a preliminary heat treatment for the purpose of developing its magnetic properties, followed, after its application to the conductor, by a heat treatment just sufficient to remove strain, but not to cause recrystallisation. The material should be capable of developing after optimum heat treatment a magnetic permeability greater than that of pure charcoal iron. Examples are given of the heat treatments appropriate to alloys described in Specifications 224,972: and 284,789, [Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.], and to an alloy consisting of 36.5 per cent of nickel, 20 per cent of chromium, 13 per cent of silicon and the balance iron.
