329,724. Hellstr÷m, O. March 4, 1929. Variable-speed, epicyclic gearing. - Reversible automatic variable-speed gearing for use on motor vehicles &c. has unbalanced weights 3 secured on .combined toothed and friction wheels 21, 22 turning on eccentric pins 2 on a driven shaft 1. The wheels engage a toothed and friction wheel 23 secured to the driving-shaft 5 and are supported by a loose central wheel 25, or alternatively the wheel 25 may be secured to the driving-shaft while the wheel 23 is loose. The gearing may be of bevel type. Reverse rotation of the shaft 1 is prevented by reversible detent means comprising a disc 10 secured to the shaft and engaged by a .one-way friction pawl 11, the direction of lock of which may be reversed by movement of a disc to which its control springs are attached. The pawl may be carried on the casing 9, which is spring- supported on the framing, or on a flywheel elastically connected to the casing. Ball or roller, wedge, or band detents may be used. The shafts 1, 16 are interconnected by a cardan joint 18 and a shaft 17 which is built up of flexible rods. Alternately or additionally, a lost-motion claw coupling buffered by leather &c. may be used.
