Cleansing-compositions especially adapted for cleaning stoves or other hard surfaces are obtained by mixing a gum, an alkali, and a chlorinated paraffin to produce a semi-solid or a solid product. A little linseed or similar oil, and resin or alum or both, may be added. For example, 30 cc. of carbon tetrachloride, 1.5 cc. of resin, and 25 cc. of a 75 per cent solution of caustic soda are agitated together for a few minutes; a solution of 6 grams of gum arabic in 20 cc. of water is added with evolution of heat, and then 3 cc. of raw linseed oil and 2 cc. of a saturated solution of alum; the mixture is agitated until it begins to solidify, and is then left to stand for about 1 hr. to form a jelly.
