Abstract

328,919. Triplex Safety Glass Co., Ltd., Lyttleton, W. R., Wilson, J., and Dick, H. W. Feb. 2, 1929. Compound transparent sheets.-Two or more sheets of glass and one or more strengthening layers are united to form a compound transparent sheet by direct fluid pressure while the contact ing surfaces are softened. The glass is coated with gelatine and preferably also with a cellulose ester cement and the strengthening layer and the glass surface layer are softened by a solvent or plasticizer excess of which is pressed out; finally the sheets are subjected to a direct fluid pressure of 200 to 600 1bs. per square in. in a closed vessel at 60‹ to 110‹ C. A mixture of alkyl phthalates and ethylene glycol ethers is preferably used to soften the surfaces and the pressing fluid preferably also has a solvent action on the surfaces. After removal of 1-8th to 3-16th inch of the softened material at the edge of the finished sheet it is sealed, or the edge may be sealed as described in Specification 326,259.
