Motor power plant. - In a plant in which a machine such as a pump is driven normally by an electric motor, but by a turbine when the electric current fails, a single quick-opening and quick-closing valve is provided for the automatic starting and stopping of the turbine. The spindle of the valve a is in two parts b, d between which a ball-race m is arranged. A spring c surrounding the lower part b tends to open the valve, and a stronger spring e surrounding the upper part tends to close it. During normal working, when the electric motor is carrying the load, both springs are rendered ineffective by latches h, i. Should the electric current fail, the latch h is tripped automatically, and the spring c causes the valve a to open so that the turbine is started up. Should the turbine attain excessive speed, the latch i is tripped and the stronger spring e closes the valve a. A handle n is provided for resetting the device.
