Abstract
328,840. Fagan, J. B. June 10, 1929. Loud-speakers; magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-A rigid diaphragm 5, Fig. 1, is divided by ribs 2 into separate resonator areas of different natural frequencies and to the ribs are attached either a plurality of reproducing or transmitting units S or a spider 19, Fig. 10, co-operating with a single reproducing or transmitting unit. The diaphragm is preferably of wood such as spruce, tapered in thickness from one side to the other and impregnated with unvulcanized rubber or other plant latex. It is clamped between two frames at its edge, the frames being held in the casing 8 by bolts 1<a>. The units S are mounted on diagonally located supports 3, Figs. 1 and 2, and each unit is designed to actuate an equal area of the diaphragm. The units may be arranged to form an elliptical pattern with the major axis parallel to the supports 3. The preferred driving unit is that described in Specification 313,406, the actuating coils being connected in seriesparallel. A reflector 11, provided to close the back of the casing 8, consists of a curved spruce board 11, Figs. 6 and 7, mounted in a frame 10, 13 and has a plurality of projecting fins 12, 14, Figs. 2 and 6, of arcuate shape preferably arranged symmetrically in pairs to form plane lunes. This reflector is also impregnated with rubber or natural plant latex.
