Abstract
328,802. Berry, H. H., and Painton, C. A. May 6, 1929. Heating by electricity. -Electric heating elements used in conjunction with thermostats in apparatus such as water heaters are provided at one end with an insulating base block adapted to be removably fixed to the apparatus and carrying leads a and b for the mains and contacts 7 and 4 for the thermostat, the element being built up of blocks 2 with helical grooves 3 threaded on a conductor 5. The spring contacts of the thermostat connecting with contacts 7 and 4 may assist in holding the thermostat in place. One end of the resistance is connected to rod 5 and thence to a portion of the lead a. The other end of the resistance is connected to contact 4 the circuit being then completed through the thermostat and contact 7 to lead b. Keys 22 fitting in recesses 23 prevent relative rotation of blocks 2 and keep the helical grooves 3 continuous, the resistance wire being placed in the grooves which are then filled up with cement.
