Fixed - chamber apparatus.-Measured quantities of lard &c. are delivered from opposite ends of a cylinder 16 within which a piston 17 reciprocates under the control of a five-way valve 21. Material is supplied by way of a pipe 22 to the port 30 and is'transferred by the valve passage 36 to the passages 19, 20 alternately and thence to the corresponding end of the cylinder 16. Duplicate upwardlydirected discharge pipes 25, 26 are alternately supplied by way of the valve passage 37. Electrical or fluid pressure means effects automatic reversal of the valve. The valve lever 39 may be connected to an armature 41 oppositely acted on by windings 40, 103 when these are energized by the closing of contacts carried by the piston rod 18. The contacts are kept apart by springs until adjustable abutments 45, 46 are encountered. In a modification, a toothed quadrant on the valve shaft is engaged by a rack 69 attached to pistons 70, 71 working in cylinders 72, 73. Connected into the pipes 19, 20 are branches 62, 63 containing piston-members 64, 65 integral with piston valves 76, 77, controlling a supply of compressed air to the cylinders 72, 73. The increased pressure resulting from the filling of the measuring chambers moves one of the pistons 64, 65 and consequently the rack 69. Each piston 70, 71 has a seating for a valve 85 on the end of a rod 84, permitting air to escape from the contracting chamber 72 or 73. Pistons 64, 65 may also be used to close contacts as indicated in Fig. 2. A pressure-absorbing or surge reservoir 24 is placed in the pipe-line 22.
