Automatic exchange apparatus.- Telephone and like apparatus is mounted in drawers which may be vertically or horizontally disposed. The horizontally-disposed drawers may, when extended, be swung up or down so that the top or bottom of the apparatus can be easily reached. The slides, in which the drawers run, are capable of movement relative to the main framework and the drawers may be mounted in vertical rows and may also be fitted back to back in the same frame. Connections to the apparatus are made either by a cable or by the provision of knife-contacts at the rear of the drawers. If knife-contacts are used terminals are provided at the front of the rack to enable connections to be established for testing purposes when the drawers are extended. The drawer is provided with runners 5, 5a, the runners 5 being larger than 5a to prevent the drawer from running out. The rollers run in slides 9 which can move relative to the framework 1, the movement of the slides being fixed by pins 4, 4<a>. When extended the drawers can be swung about pins 5. The slides 9 are joined by a plate 17 which forms a tray below the drawer and the connecting cable 16 rests on the tray 17 and enters the drawer along bar 11. The cable is fixed to the framework at A and to the drawer at E, and is bent to the shape shown so that the twist caused by swinging the drawers is spread over a considerable length. The tray 17 may be detachably fixed to the bottom of the drawer and handles may be fixed to the front of the drawers to facilitate removal. The drawers and frames are constructed so that, when in the normal position, the apparatus is protected from dust.
