Be it known that I, ERNEST W. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display Devices for Garments, of which the following is a specification. i

This invention relates to a display device for garments and has for its object to provide a cabinet in which is mounted a movable support upon which articles of wearing apparel may be suspended upon hangers in such a manner that said articles may be protected from dust and injury when the cabinet is closed, and also in such a manner that access may be easily had to all the garments within the cabinet in order that they may be removed therefrom for inspection without it being necessary to rotate ay large, cumbersome framework common to many devices of this character and upon which only one-half of the articles are visible from any one point at a time, it being possible with the device of this invention when the same is open 'for inspection for a sales person and prospective customer to see at once and have access to all the articles within the cabinet from a position in front of said cabinet. v

Another object of the invention is to provide a device in. which garments of long or short lengths may be placed witho-ut it being necessary to waste space when short garments are displayed, there being a plurality ofy garment rsupports provided `which are adapted to be adjusted to dierent heights to accommodate varying lengths of garments.

The' invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.

Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a rdisplay device for garments embodying my invention, the cabinet being illustrated in section, and the doors of the cabinet being removed therefrom.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

In the drawings, 5 represents a cabinet of any suitable construction and having side walls 6 and 7, aback wall 8, a top 9 and a iloor 10. There is an opening 11 at the front ofthe cabinet 5, said opening being normally closed by any suitable type of hinged or sliding doors desired, said doors not being illustrated in the drawings, but being well known to those skilled in theart.

Located within the cabinet `5 adjacent to the top 9 and fast to the side walls 6 and 7 are tracks 12, while at the bottom of the cabinet beneath the floor 10 and fast to the side walls 6 and 7 are tracks 13. The tracks 12 and 13 at each side of the cabinet are utilized as supports for side frames 14E of light construction and preferably consisting of a pair of vertical bars 15 and a pair o-f horizontal bars 16 suitably bolted orriveted together at 17.

Rotatably mounted in any suitable manner upon the upper end portions of each of the vertical bars 15 are grooved rollers 18 and 19, the rollers `18 being yadapted to rest upon the upper edge of the track 12 and to travel thereover, while the rollers 19 engage the under edge of the track 12 and act to prevent the upper rollers 18 from becoming disengaged from said track. Located at the lower end of each of the vertical bars 15 upon the portion thereof which projects beneath the floor 10 and also rotatable in any suitable manner upon said bars, are grooved rollers 20, said rollers being adapted to rest upon and to travel over the upper edge of the track 13. Slots 21 are provided in the floor 10 of the cabinet 5 and the lower end portions of the bars 15 of the side frames 1-'1 project through said slots.

rlhe side frames 14 are connected together beneath the floor 10 through the medium of diagonally disposed cross braces 22 and 23, the opposite ends of which,l are attached to the Ilower end portions of theV diagonally opposite vertical bars 15. Thebraces 22 and l23 constitute the main connection between the two side frames 14 andr enable said frames to be moved forwardly and backwardly in unison within ythe cabinet 5 and, in effect, to constitute a single garment supporting frame.

Loc-ated adjacent to the rear of the side frames 14- and fastened by brackets 24 to the horizontal bars 16 are vertical rods 25 upon which are supported a plurality of horizontal rods 26, the opposite ends of which are mounted in members 2'?, the latter being adjustable vertically upon the rods 25. The rods 26 are provided for the purpose of suspending' garment hangers, the latter in turn being employed in suspending, in the usual Well known manner, the vario-us typos of wearing apparel upon display.

Located at the forward end of the side frames 14 are vertical rods 28, these rods being` rotatably mounted at their opposite ends in bearings 29 fast to the forward ends of the horizontal bars 16. Fast to the rods 28 are a plurality of arms 30, the latter embodying therein members 81 which are adjustable vertically upon the rods 28 and are preferably rigidly fastened thereto by thumb nuts when adjusted to the height desired. The arms 30 are utilized in a manner similar to the rods 26 to Suspend hangers with garments thereon.

When the cabinet is closed, the garment supporting frame is located at the rear of said cabinet, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, and the arms 30 are swung inwardly as illustrated in Fig. 2.

When, however, it is desired to display the garments to a prospective purchaser, the supporting` frame is pulled forwardly to the position illustrated in Figure 4, and the arms 30 are then swung outwardly also as illustrated in said Figure 4, at which time all the garments within the cabinet are within the view of the sales person and prospective purchaser and can be seen at a glance and easily removed if desired. If it is desired to utilize the device for the display of garments of full length, the upper of the rods 26 and arms 30 only are employed, the lower of said rods and arms being unfa-stened and lowered upon the vertical bars 25 and 29 respectively to the bottom of the device, the arms 30 being also swung rearwardly where they will not interfere with the garments hanging in a free and proper manner. When, however, short garments are displayed, the rods 26 and arms 30 are Iarranged as illustrated in the various figures of the drawings, and particular attention is called to the fact that the entire capacity of the cabinet 5 can beutilized because of the provision of the two sets of rods 26 and arms 30, and no space is wasted within the cabinet.

Because of its light construction, the garment supporting frame is easily moved forwardly and rearwardly within the cabinet .and no effort whatever is required in swinging the arms 30 inwardly and outwardly as required. The device withal discloses a simple, practical and inexpensive structure in which garments may be suspended in a compact and attractive manner.

2. ln combination, a cabinet, tracks fast to the sides of said cabinet adjacent to the top thereof, other tracks also fast to the sides of said cabinet adjacent to the bottom thereof, frames located adjacent to the oppositesides of said cabinet, a plurality of rollers mounted upon said frames and adapted to travel upon said tracks, a plurality of other rollers also mountedV upon said frames and engaging the under surface of said first named tracks to prevent said firstnained rollers from becoming disengaged from their respective tracks, a pair of diagonally disposed cross braces located at the bottom of said cabinet beneath the floor thereof and connecting the lower portions of said frames together, vertical rods fast to said frames, garment supporting rods fast to said vertical supporting rods and adjustable upon thc exterior of the latter, other vertical rods rotatably mounted on said frames and a plurality of garment supporting` arms fast to said last-named rods and adjustable vertically thereon.
