327,864. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., Davidson, A., Hailwood, A. J., Henesey, F., and Shepherdson, A. April 15, 1929. Indigo; dye preparations.-Leuco-indigo preparations are made by reducing dispersed indigo having a particle size less than 10 Á by means of alkali and reducing sugar, in the proportions of not more than one molecule of sugar and not more than seven molecules of alkali to each molecule of indigo. The reducing sugar may comprise glucose or invert sugar from beetmolasses and the product may be mixed with molasses and glues or other albuminous or proteid materials. The indigo employed as starting material may contain indigoid or thioindigoid shading dyes. In an example, indigo powder is milled with sulphite cellulose pitch and water, and the resulting paste, containing the indigo in a highly dispersed form, is mixed with invert sugar and caustic soda solution and heated in a stream of coal gas or other air-free gas. After the reduction is complete the mixture is neutralized with hydrochloric acid, when the resulting paste of indigo white may be concentrated by evaporation or filtration.
