Counter scales; compound-lever apparatus; pendulum-weight apparatus; relieving and locking mechanism.-In a counter weighing-scale, the lever system, and the automatic weight-indicating mechanism, where such is employed, are locked automatically against movement when the scale is lifted. As applied to a weighing scale of the kind described in Specification 224,375, the locking arrangements, Fig. 1, comprise levers 10 pivoted on supports 11, springs 13 tending to turn the levers, plungers 8 slidable through the base feet 6 and a rod 16, the lower end of which is out of contact with the weighbeam 9 in the weighing position. When the scale is raised from the counter the springs 13 turn the levers 10 so as to push the plungers 8 through the feet 6 as shown and cause the upper ends of the plungers to clamp the hooked ends 9<a> of the weighbeam. Projections 10<a> on the levers 10 engage the lowermost levers 12 of the lever system and raise them so as to carry upwards the levers 14 and weighbeam 9, thus removing the main knife-edges from their bearing blocks as shown. The upward movement of the weighbeam raises the rod 16 and brings the serrated end of a lever 18 into contact with a V-shaped projection 19<a> on the pendulous resistant, thus lifting the pendulous resistant and bringing its knife-edge 21 into abutment with hooded caps 22, thereby completely locking the weighing system. When the scale is again deposited on the counter the plungers 8 are thrust in and the various parts are automatically restored to the weighing position. By screwing out the feet 6 the locking mechanism may be brought into action when the scale is resting on the counter. In a modification, Fig. 5, the rods 8 are provided with pistons 8a slidable in cylinders formed in the feet. In a. further modification wherein the plungers 8 are dispensed with, the base plate of the scale carries a pair of levers 23, Fig. 3, fitted at the ends with rollers. When the scale is raised from the counter the levers rotate under the action of springs into the position shown and raise the pan supports 25, together with the lowermost levers to which the pan supports are attached. The lowermost levers in rising lift the intermediate levers and the weighbeam, the end knife-edges of the weighbeam being engaged by hooded caps carried by the lowermost levers.
