Braiding-machines. - The outer heads of a machine for making flat braids are removable so that the total number of operative heads may be readily varied. The six outermost heads A - - C of a sixteen head machine are made larger than the heads D, E. The heads B - - E have four slot collars while the heads A have five-slot collars. The heads A, E are provided each with single gears, the heads B, D with two gears each and the heads C with three gears. Fig. 4 shows the heads A, B interchanged so that the machine may run as a fourteenstrand machine. The end head E drives the head D through gears D', D<2> which are fast and are proportioned to provide a reduction corresponding to the radio between the diameters of the collars D<1>, C', the gear D<2> driving an equal gear on the head C. The gear C<2> gearing with D' runs loose and drives the head A. The head B runs idly and is set so that no two slots on the collars A<1>, B' ever meet. Fig. 5 shows the heads set to run as a twelve-strand machine. The head A is driven by the head D and drives the head C idly, the heads A, C being set so that no two slots ever meet. In the normal running as a sixteen-strand machine, the head A is driven through gearing A<2>, B<2>, C<2>, D<3> meshing together and the head B is driven through gearing B<4>, C', C<3>, D<2> and D<3>. According to the Provisional Specification the machine may also be converted to a ten-strand machine.
