Abstract

326,926. Henze, T. O. May 9, 1929. Compound transparent sheets.-In a process for manufacturing safety glass of the type consisting of a sheet of celluloid interposed between two sheets of glass, the glass sheets are coated with a solution of isinglass in distilled water and dried, and the celluloid sheet is coated with a solution of celluloid in amyl acetate, urea and formalin, the sheets being then mounted together, immersed for about 90 seconds in a bath of spirits of wine or other colourless alcohol and pressed between sheets of perforated wood pulp. A pressure of about 2-3 lbs. is applied for about ten minutes at a temperature of 60‹ F. The isinglass solution may consist of 1 oz. of islinglass in about 1 pint of water, two coats being preferably applied. For coating the celluloid sheet, 1 oz. of celluloid is dissolved in one pint of amyl acetate mixed with “ oz. of urea and ¢ to 1 oz. of formalin. After pressing, the edges of the celluloid sheet are gouged away to a depth of about 4 m.m. and the space thus formed sealed with a composition consisting of 2 parts by weight of gutta percha, 1 part of chloroform and 2 parts of water-glass.
