Abstract

334,378. Dehn, F. B., (Libbey-Owens Glass Co.). Aug. 30, 1929. Compound transparent sheets. - In making laminated glass having a non-brittle sheet mounted between coated sheets of glass, the coating for the glass sheets consists of a mixture of gelatine and a solvent therefor, cellulose composition, and a solvent therefor, and a mutual solvent. The coating solution 11 which may be sprayed on to the glass 10 by a gun 12 is preferably formed of gelatine, nitrocellulose, a galatine solvent such as water, a nitrocellulose solvent such as acetone and a common solvent such as acetic acid. A suitable mixture consists of 1 per cent of gelatine, 1 per cent of nitrocellulose, 70 per cent of acetic acid, 14 per cent of water, and 14 per cent of acetone A number of coated sheets 17 may be dried in a cabinet 14. The dried sheet is then covered either by a spray gun 20, or by dipping, with a film 21 of bonding medium which may consist of 30 per cent dibutyl phthalate, 30 per cent butyl carbitol and 40 per cent carbitol. The. sheet of pyroxylin or other non-brittle layer may also be covered with this mixture and the sheets then assembled and subjected to heat and pressure. In some cases the bonding layer may be applied to the coated glass or the plastic sheet only. The product may be sealed at the edges. The process may also be employed in making bullet-proof glass, Fig. 7.
