Abstract
322,735. Seaborne, C. R. Sept. 3, 1928. Pulping-engines.-In a machine for beating paper stock of the type in which the pulp is circulated from an outer receptacle C, Fig. 2, through an inner bowl B and by centrifugal force through relatively rotating and stationary sets of knives, the bottom of the bowl is open and one set of knives b<2>, Fig. 7, is carried on the lower part of the bowl and the other a', Fig. 3, by a rotary plate-member A below the bowl, means such as blades a<2> being provided within the sets of knives to break up accumulations of paper stock and maintain the circulation within the bowl. The plate member A forms the bottom of the bowl and is driven through gearing 17, and is provided on its underside with curved metal strips 20, having inclined ends 20<a>, which throw outwardly any material tending to lodge between the plate and the tank bottom. The blades a<2> are provided with detachable wearing plates a<3> while offsets b<5> are formed on the bowl B to co-operate with the blades a<2>. The knives b<2> may be grouped to form open channels b<3>, Fig. 7. The bowl is provided with three blocks 25 bolted to lugs b and having ribs slidable in channelled castings 27, the bowl being supported on vertical bolts 28 rubber cushioning -members 31, 32 being provided. The knives b<2>, a<1> are pressed into contact by the action of levers 36, under spring control 39, bearing on the rubber cushions 31. The control nuts 34 on the bolts 28 may be adjusted individually but preferably are controlled together, any movement of one nut by the handle 34d being transmitted to the others by a chain S. The beater is charged from the top while inlet and discharge pipes 50, 52 for water are provided. The circulation through the tank C and within the bowl B is as shown in Fig. 2.
