' fffrif BEK-PEF? l' *Appiietion'mea February 3,1927. serial No.y iesgssaj i i The present improvementsfrelate more particularly to a beater ofthe continuous type for reducing stock to'pulp, commonly knownas a tub beater. A Y Y l -5 The invention relates-more specifically to tub beaters of the continuous type in 4which pulp which has been'reduced to'the desired size or inen'ess, is continuously withdrawn from the moving mass .of pulp in the beater,r
' i0 while regulated quantitiesof fresh charge are added,l either continuously or intermittentlywithout interrupting the continuous operationofthe machine.
In its more specific embodiment, the yinven-kvv 15 tion comprises a perforated plate forming part of, or placed in the hood `normally disv posed over the'beater roll, through `which Vthe pulp, which hasbeen reducedto the degree of neness desired is dischargedby thecen-k 20 trifugal rotary action of the beater. d
As a feature ofthe present invention,' this perforated plate is disposed immediately above, or on the same side of thebeater roll as the usual back fall.l l
25. The advantage accruing to the placing of this perforated plateon the same Side ofthe roll i* as is located the back fall., is that the maxif d .35AV force.
Pulp passing through s'aidperforatedplat'e7 is withdrawn through a discharge pipe communicating with the usual stuff chest or other obvious instrumentality.

I am aware that heretofore, beaters of the contin.uoustype have been known in the prior art. I am also aware that the prior art disgclcses continuous beaters utilizing a perforated back fall and utilizinga-perforated plat-e onthe opposite side of the beater roll from that on which the back fall is located in combination with anelem'ent for removing the larger pieces which might adhere to the perforated surface.v
The present invention has obviousadvantages thereover, among which may be pointed out the greater capacity due to taking advantage of the maximumcentrifugal force set up by the revolving beater roll 5,y and the eliminationof the necessity forinechanical scraping' or cleaning refuse, that is the foreignwmatter of larger size Ithan theperforations,` which is objectionable inthe particuyliar grade of stock which it is desiredto prouce. It has been found in use that the centrifn remove said larger size particles `from they surface of the perforated plate. vThe insuiiiciently reduced pulp is thrown back into the ybeatingengine' while the suiciently reduced fibres pass through the perforations and on to the stuff. chest. The operation is continuous, and highlyefiicient.
I claim; asmy invention:
1. A pulping machine.comprising a beater tub. a beater roll mounted for rotation in said tub. a back fall on one side of said roll and slightly spaced'therefrom, aperforated strainer element mounted in the upper portion ofsaid tub on the back fall side of said roll and disposed directly over the spacebetween said roll andback falhv and means for conducting away thekinaterial discharged through said element. y
2. A pulping machine comprising a beater tub, al beater roll mounted for rotation in said tub, abackfall von one side of said roll and slightly spaced therefrom, a perforated plate mounted in-the upper portion of said tub on the back fall side of said roll and dis-V posed directly over the space between said point beyond the top of said back fall, and I `means on the side of said plate opposite the roll for conducting away material discharged r through the plate.
