Abstract

Loud-speakers; magnetic instruments; diaphragms.- A loud-speaker diaphragm is made by mounting a lacquer or lacquered membrane in a state of tension on a rigid frame and then straining the membrane by a lateral displacement with respect to the frame so that it assumes a cissoid form. The lacquer membrane may be formed by applying the lacquer to a sheet of glass from which it is stripped when dry. The illustration shows a form in which a lacquered membrane is laterally displaced by a second diaphragm of deeper cissoid form. The diaphragm 10 is made by stretching a sheet of light material such as nainsook, muslin, &c. over a frame 30, applying a solution of lacquer which is allowed to dry, and then displacing the centre by connecting it with the centre of the diaphragm 20 which is made by coating with lacquer a sheet of material already mounted in cissoid form. The tensioning means consists of a screwed rod 41 with clamping washers 44, the diaphragms having central strengthening patches; the reed is attached by a sleeve 47. The frames may be square, oval, circular, &c. and the two frames may be of different sizes. Suitable lacquers are made from hydrated-triacetate of cotton dissolved in a mixture of methyl acetone and ethylene dichloride; plasticizers may be added. Specification 295,625 is referred to.
