Graters.-A grater for cassava and like roots consists of a rotary grating surface, a hopper for holding the roots in contact with the grating surface, and a rotary brush which travels in the same direction, but at a greater linear speed than, the grating surface and removes grated material therefrom to a discharge shoot. The surface may be of cylindrical, conical, or, as shown, of disc shape, and is of such construction that the gratings do not pass through the grating surface. In Fig. 2, the grating disc E is carried on a shaft C having a handwheel c. The hopper A is provided with a hinged member B which is used to press the roots against the disc E. The rotary brush K is on a shaft H radial to the disc E and is rotated by a gear wheel h<3> on the back of the disc E meshing with a wheel h<2> connected by bevels h with the shaft H.
