Be it known that I, BERTON A. GARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ballston Spa, county of Saratoga, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to' gearing and particularly gearing of the type wherein a pinion meshes with two or more gear wheels each of which comprises a plurality of plates or disks rigidly fastened together at their central portions and slightly spaced apart at their peripheries whereby they may yield slightly under tooth pressure to effect an equal distribution of the load.
In connection with such gearing it has heretofore been the practice to arrange the gear wheels so that the spaces between the plates of the gear wheels come opposite each other and as a result there is no wear on the pinion at the points where these spaces occur. As the pinion wears in actual service therefore and also when it is being ground true during manufacture by running the gearing with a grinding material between the teeth, slight ridges corresponding to the spaces between the plates are formed which are objectionable for various rea-l sons.
The object of my present invention is to overcome this diiiiculty or objectionable fea.- ture and to this end I so arrange the gear wheels that the spaces between their disks are staggered relatively to each other. That is, the spaces between the disks of one gear wheel do not come directly opposite the spaces between the disks of the other gear wheel or gear wheels. One way of accomplishing this is to make a certain disk `or disks of one gear wheel of a thickness d1fferent from that of the opposed disk or disks of the other gear wheel and this is the arrangement I have illustrated in the drawing.
In the drawing the ligure shows a gearing embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a pinion having a shaft 2 mounted in bearing 3. Meshing with pinion 1 are two gear wheels 4 and 5 carried by shafts 6 and 7 respectively which shafts are mounted in bear- Specication of Letters Patent.

In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principl-e of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and the invention may be carried out by other means.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In a gearing, the combination of a pinion, and a plurality of gear wheels, meshing therewith, each of said gear wheels comprising a plurality of disks fastened .together at their central portions and slightly spaced apart at their peripheries, the spaces between the disks of the respective gear wheels being staggered relatively to each other.
2. In a gearing, the combination of a pinion and two gear wheels meshing therewith, each of said gear wheels comprising a 3.
