MAGNET WHEEL.
Application filed March 31, 1926, Serial No. 98,787, and. in Germany April 7, 1925.
My invention relates to magnet wheels for dynamo-electric machines and particularly to such wheels which are of large size and have segmentally divided rims. An object of my invention is the provision of a magnet wheel of this type having improved means for securing the rim segments so as better to enable the wheel to withstand the great stresses to which it is subjected. 7
My invention will be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and its scope will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a frag mentary side elevation of a magnet wheel embodying my invention and Fig. 2 1s a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The magnet wheel which I have illustrated is of very large size and is accordingly built up of separate parts. The hub 1 which may be made in a single piece or in two or more pieces has the central under-cut flange portion 2 to which are secured, as for example by bolts 3, pairs of axially displaced spokes or arms 4. The rim of the wheel is formed by two series of rim segments 5 which are secured as by the bolts 6 to the outer side faces of the spokes. Suitable 3o flanged spacing segments 7 are shown between the spokes at their outer ends.
As shown in Fig. 1 the rim segments 5 extend each from a point opposite the center line of one spoke to a point opposite the center line of the second spoke therefrom, making butt joints with one another with the line of division extending radially. The segments lie against the side faces of the spokes and have extended areas of contact 40 therewith which permits the use of a sufficient number of bolts to make the necessary firm connection between the spokes and the rim segments. This area of contact between the spokes and the segments is moreover increased by making the spoke ends of greater width circumferentially than the body portions thereof. At the ends of the segments where additional securing means is desirable the segments are made with a posite the center greater width radially, thus facilitating the use of additional securing bolts. The rim comprising the segments 5 and the spacer 7 is shown having a cylindrical periphery to which field magnets or the like may be fixed by any suitable means.
lVhat-I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1s:
1. A magnet wheel comprising a series of spokes having their ends widened to form a substantially continuous peripheral web, and a plurality of rim segments secured against the sides of the spokes, the segments being arranged with their ends substantially oplines of certain of the spokes.
2. A magnet wheel comprising a hub, a series of spokes secured thereto having their ends widened to form a substantially con tinuous peripheral web, a plurality of rim segments having portions overlying the sides of the spokes, and means for securingthe segments to the spokes, the respective segments being constructed to form butt joints with each other at points arranged substantially opposite the center lines of'certain of the spokes. l
3. A magnet wheel comprising a hub, a series of spokes having their outer ends circumferentially extended to form a substantially continuous peripheral web, a rim comprising a plurality of segments having joints arranged substantially opposite the center lines of certain of the spokes and means for securing the segments to the side faces of the spokes at the circumferentially extended portions thereof.
4. A magnet wheel comprising a hub, a series of spokes secured thereto, a rim comprising a plurality of segments making butt joints with one another and arranged substantially opposite the center linesof certain of the spokes, said segments having widened endportions, and means passing through the widened end portions of the segments and through intermediate portions thereof for securing the segments against the sides of the spokes.
5. A magnet wheel comprising a hub, pairs of axially displaced spokes secured thereto, of sald spokes having 5 run segments engaging a space block between the outer ends flanges, two series of respectively the outer side faces of the spokes of each pair and said space block, through the rim segments securing bolts passing the space blocks and the end portions of the spokes, the adjacent rim segments making butt joints With each other on lines lying substantially 0pposite the center lines of certain spokes.
