Abstract

319,842. Sinclair, A. March 26, 1929. Lantern shutters.-An anti-dazzle device for vehicle lamps comprises a series' of parallel slats 3 to the front or rear of each of which a centrally disposed vertical operating bar 6 is pivotally connected by means of a link, arm, or wire 7 which also serves to support and attach the plate to the spindle or trunnion 4 upon which the plate turns. The plates may be made of glass, or other translucent material, which is preferably tinted orange, yellow, or other colour, and one or both sides of the plates may be frosted, ground, corrugated, or otherwise treated to diffuse the light. The plates may also be provided with additional connections, preferably wire clips 16, for attaching them to or supporting them from the spindles. The ends of the spindles are mounted in the sides ofthe lamp reflector or in a' separate reflector or frame 5 the ends of the plates being shaped to follow the contour of the reflector or frame. The frame may be attached to or fitted within the lamp reflector or to the front of the lamp casing, in which latter case the diameter of the inner edge of an internal flange 17 on the frame is made at least as large as the diameter of the outer edge of the lamp reflector. The ends of the bar 6 may be received into sockets or tubular brackets fixed to the top and bottom of the reflector or frame 5, and the bar is fitted with a double hook 12. The bar 6 is operated as by means of a Bowden wire 8, which is connected to a chain 10 passing over a pulley 11 and through the reflector or frame 5 to the hook 12, against the action of a spring 13 connected at one end to the hook 12 and at the other end to a connection 14 fixed to the top of the reflector or frame 5.
