Abstract
319,769. Humphreys & Glasgow, Ltd., (Assignees of Terzian, H. G.). Sept- 29, 1928, [Convention date]. Producers.-A mixed oil gas and water gas of any pre-determined calorific value is obtained by cracking oil gas or natural gas with deposition of carbon in a fuel bed from which the water gas is obtained by air and steam blasting, the generation of water gas being limited to the volume required in using up the deposited carbon, which may, however, be partly used to store heat in the fuel bed by its combustion. The process may be carried out in a water gas generator having in addition to the usual connections, inlets for hydrocarbon gases above and below the fuel bed, so that up and down runs may be made, and steam may be admitted with the oil gas, the oil gas and steam runs being arranged in any desired order. As applied to a carburetted water gas set comprising a. generator 31, carburettor 32 and superheater 33, oil gas is admitted through inlets 52 or 53, or oil to be cracked through inlets 56, 57. The generator has an air blast inlet 34, steam inlets 35, 36, gas outlets 38, 39, 40 and water gas outlet 23. The carburettor has an oil gas inlet 24 and air inlet 22 to burn the blow gases, and the superheater has an oil gas inlet 55, an oil inlet 57 and a steam inlet 37, an outlet 61 for cracked oil gas being provided between the generator and carburettor. This apparatus may be used as an ordinary carburetted water gas set, but in the present instance after air blasting with secondary air supplied at the inlet 22 oil may be supplied by the pipe 55 to the superheater and the oil gas passed through the fuel bed on which excess carbon is deposited, the oil gas passing to the outlet 40. Oil gas may then be introduced by pipe 52 and passed in a reverse direction through the fire, then an up-run or down-run with steam from inlet 35 or 36 or 37. Some of the lightly cracked oil gas may be led off through connection 61 and mixed with the more completely cracked oil gas that has passed through the fuel bed and been mixed with the water gas, or during an up-run of oil gas or steam the resultant gas may be enriched by admitting additional oil gas at 24 or 53. Enrichment may also be obtained by the admission of oil gas through pipe 55. The oil gas may be obtained by supplying oil through pipe 57 and completing its cracking at the fuel bed. The cycles include steam runs, oil gas runs and air blasts in various sequences, and steam may be admitted in an oil gas run. In a modification the gas generator may be operated with a single heat recuperator.
